Amazon India is partnering with Eicher Motors and Buses to further electrify its e-commerce logistics in the country. This move is an important step towards Amazon’s active efforts to decarbonize its transportation and create a more sustainable delivery fleet. Initially, Amazon will deploy 50 electric trucks by the end of 2024 in Delhi, Manesar, and Gurugram. Over the next five years, Amazon plans to deploy up to 1,000 electric trucks with varying payload capabilities in its delivery operations.
Fighting the effects of climate change requires constant innovation and action, and Amazon is partnering with companies who share our passion for inventing new ways to minimize our impact on the environment.
The electric trucks—with deck lengths ranging from 8 to 24 feet—will come equipped with advanced digital features and a customisable cargo stacking system. This will ensure seamless and efficient deliveries to our customers’ homes.
The service solution from Eicher also factors in availability of charging infrastructure, operational requirements, charging time constraints, battery capacity, and overall energy management strategies of the fleet. The trucks will be a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration, with multiple fast and slow charging options tailored to meet the unique needs of logistics operations.
Abhinav Singh, VP of Customer Fulfilment, Amazon Transportation Services, Global Speciality Fullfilment, and Supply Chain at Amazon India, says, “We are proud to work with key partners to lead the way in the electrification of vehicles within our delivery operations. This is part of our commitment to innovate and invent for climate change."
There is no established playbook for fleet transformation at scale, but we are making progress through collaborations like this one. We are well on our way to integrate 10,000 electric vehicles into our delivery fleet in India by 2025. We invite fellow innovators and solution providers in the electric mobility and sustainable transportation space to join us in accelerating the decarbonisation of the logistics industry.
Vinod Aggarwal, Managing Director and CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), a joint venture of Eicher Motors and Volvo Group says, "We are pleased to collaborate with Amazon as we begin the pilots for Amazon's e-commerce deliveries in Indore, Delhi, Manesar, and Gurugram. This partnership reflects our commitment to promoting smart sustainable solutions and developing a zero-emission transport ecosystem."
This collaboration between Amazon and Eicher marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to decarbonise freight transportation, heralding a pivotal step in advancing electric mobility in India.
"As an integral part of our e-FAST program, this partnership promises to yield invaluable insights for the broader electric mobility sector in the country. By embracing such initiatives, we pave the way for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future,” says Sinha.
The partnership aligns with Amazon’s broader mission to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. By successfully integrating electric vehicles into its delivery fleet across 400+ cities in India, Amazon is taking strides towards a greener, more sustainable future.
