Amazon India unveils its Exports Digest

Ethnic fashion brand Janasya began life as a family-run, brick-and-mortar saree retailer in the bylanes of Surat. In 2015, founder Vinay Kanodia decided to take his fledgling brand online and eventually reach discerning ethnic wear connoisseurs across the world through Amazon Global Selling.

With end-to-end support from Amazon Global Selling, Janasya has grown at an average of 15-20% YoY with over 100 products retailing across Amazon sites in the U.S., Canada, UK, and Australia. Kanodia credits this to the AGS partnership. “With the help of Amazon’s innovative tools, we could save time, implement things faster, and handle logistics efficiently,” he says. “Amazon Global Selling SEND (a cross-border shipping solution offered by Amazon) helped us save costs. Tools like the Fulfillment by Amazon (which takes care of logistics for sellers) dashboard are very useful to manage inventory and replenishment.”

The changes will help sellers expand their product portfolio on Amazon.in and grow their business.

Another case in point is Meeta Sharma Gupta’s Shumee Toys. Like most parents, the U.S.-returned Meeta failed to find toys that would nurture her child’s imagination and creativity. By 2014, she founded Shumee Toys, a design-first firm dedicated to bringing back the joy of simple, durable wooden toys. Meeta expanded Shumee’s reach beyond India with the active support of the Amazon Global Selling team and Shumee is today a successful global brand with over 5 lakh customers across India, the U.S., and UAE.

Pee Safe’s exports journey spotlights the challenges and opportunities facing D2C entrepreneurs with global ambitions. Co-founder Rithish Kumar decodes common pitfalls and shares Amazon Global Selling’s role in simplifying exports.

“Amazon Global Selling is empowering Indian exporters to reach customers globally and technology is the driving force that is simplifying e-commerce exports for Indian MSMEs. We’re investing significantly in tools and technologies to help sellers optimise their reach, enhance product discovery, and increase sales,” says Bhupen Wakankar, Director Global Trade, Amazon India. “The programme's success reflects in the growing number of exporters building thriving businesses on Amazon’s global marketplaces. We will continue to support the growth of small businesses and startups by leveraging technology and strong linkages with different stakeholders. Amazon is committed to enabling $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India by 2025.”

City no bar for global ambitions

From metros to towns, e-commerce is fueling export dreams by blurring geographical constraints. Even businesses from relatively small cities such as Karur in Tamil Nadu and Gautam Buddha Nagar in UP, are finding great success with exports to customers in North America, Europe, Australia, and Middle East.

The categories lead the exports pack

Product categories such as home, apparel, beauty, health and personal care, and toys recorded export growth of 20-40% YoY. Several new categories such as groceries, office products, furniture, automotive supplies and industrial equipment are also gaining traction. During Amazon's Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM) sale event in 2023, Indian exporters recorded over 80% business growth compared to business as usual days.

Fueling export growth with innovative tech

Businesses prosper when they harness technology. Amazon is putting technology to work for simplifying e-commerce exports end-to-end for India’s MSMEs and D2C startups, positioning them for success in international markets and setting them on an accelerated growth trajectory. Amazon's array of technology solutions is the key to smoothening the export journey. The Export Navigator dashboard, for instance, guides exporters on regulatory requirements across registration, product, taxation, shipping and payment reconciliation. Amazon Global Selling SEND enables FBA sellers to ship inventory from India to global fulfillment centers in a cost-effective manner. Exporters can also leverage Amazon's trusted Service Provider Network for assistance with product photography, advertising and more.

E-commerce: A powerful catalyst of economic growth

To build on its exports’ momentum, Amazon is partnering with the government, trade organisations, export promotion councils, and service providers.

"Boosting MSME exports is crucial for our nation's economic growth, and e-commerce is proving to be a powerful catalyst in this regard. The government is committed to fostering an environment where MSMEs can thrive and expand globally, in alignment with Prime Minister Modi's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat," says Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

"E-commerce exports, supported by programmes like Amazon Global Selling, is instrumental in providing MSMEs with opportunities to showcase their products to a global audience. Entrepreneurs from districts, cities, and small towns across India have great potential to take up e-commerce exports. With the right policies and an enabling ecosystem, we can empower these entrepreneurs and position India as a leading export nation."

In the years ahead, initiatives under the new Foreign Trade Policy combined with technological advancements will open up unprecedented growth opportunities for Indian MSMEs in global trade. With Amazon's innovative solutions and global scale, Indian exporters and entrepreneurs are well-positioned to capitalise on this opportunity and build world-class brands from India.
