Amazon India has made significant strides in empowering MSMEs over the years and is on track to meet all the pledges it made in 2020.

“Over the last four years, we have invested significant time and effort towards the pledges we announced at the inaugural Smbhav Summit in 2020. We are humbled to share that we have hit our pledge to digitise 10 million small businesses one year ahead of time and have enabled over 12 million small businesses to become a part of the digital economy. We have enabled nearly $13 billion in cumulative exports and have created nearly 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs in India,” Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, said at Smbhav 2024, in New Delhi today.

The program empowers D2C firms to build an export business via e-commerce. More than half of the startups shortlisted for Season 4 have women founders or co-founders; nearly 4 in 10 ventures are based in tier 2 cities.

Amazon had taken ambitious pledges for India: digitise 10 million small businesses, create 2 million direct and indirect jobs and enable $20 billion in e-commerce exports by 2025.

$80 billion in cumulative exports by 2030

At Smbhav 2024, Amazon also announced plans to enable over $80 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports from India by 2030. This is 4x more than its pledge of enabling $20 billion in e-commerce exports by 2025, reflecting the strong potential and demand for ‘Made in India’ products.

To achieve this goal, Amazon is collaborating closely with the government, lakhs of Indian small businesses and D2C brands, and other key stakeholders. The company has been working with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to leverage the Districts as Export Hubs initiative, aiming to boost MSME exports across India. This expanded export target aligns with the government's priority to increase MSME exports. Through these efforts, Amazon demonstrates its commitment to supporting India's small and medium businesses, helping them scale beyond borders, and playing a crucial role in the country's economic growth and job creation.

Creating jobs

Since its launch in India, Amazon has helped create more than 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs in the country. These jobs include roles in fulfilment centres and distribution centres, customer service, software development, human resources, program management, machine-learning data services, seller support, and more. In September this year, Amazon became the first e-commerce company in India to sign an MoU with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to post work opportunities from Amazon (and its staffing agencies) on the ministry’s National Career Service (NCS) portal.
