Amazon has announced a significant leap forward in its sustainability efforts, surpassing its goal of deploying 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its India delivery fleet more than a year ahead of schedule. This milestone, achieved in October 2024, marks an important milestone in Amazon's commitment to The Climate Pledge, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040, ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Amazon’s EVs are now making deliveries in major metros like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, as well as reaching remote locations from Leh to Gangtok, covering a total of 500 cities across India. EVs reduce carbon emissions by taking traditional diesel vehicles off Indian roads.

Amazon India has piloted electric vehicles in several cities across India in 2019 and is now expanding this initiative across the country.

Testing long-range electric heavy trucks

Amazon continues to make progress in decarbonising its fleet and is the first e-commerce company to test long-range electric heavy trucks along the 350km Bengaluru-Chennai highway under The Climate Pledge’s Laneshift Initiative. The project brings together industry leaders including Amazon, Ashok Leyland, Billion-E, and ChargeZone to explore the potential of long-range electric freight transportation.

The Laneshift-India EV freight corridor project is the first step in the development of a network of connected EV freight highways in India, bringing together businesses, logistics service providers, original equipment manufacturers, charging point operators, and financiers to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks across India's highways.

On top of bringing together vehicle manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers, Amazon and The Climate Pledge have enabled hundreds of new jobs in India, thanks to the collaboration with Delivery Service Providers, fleet operators, and finance providers.

Amazon is extending its tested and proven logistics solutions to businesses across India. These services provide clear pricing and easy integration for both B2B and B2C operations for companies of all sizes.

“Having more than 10,000 electric vehicles in our fleet and successfully testing long-range electric trucks are achievements that we are very proud of at Amazon. As a company and as a country, we must transition to zero tailpipe emission trucks to meet India’s net-zero goals and cut reliance on diesel freight,” says Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations at Amazon India.

The logistics industry still faces limited charging infrastructure and range anxiety, and we are excited to continue to work with the government and key players in the industry to find solutions.

Custom EVs for Amazon’s delivery goals

Amazon has developed custom EVs through collaborations with leading manufacturers like Volvo Eicher, Tata Motors, and Altigreen. The company enables affordable financing for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and trucks, helping to lower adoption barriers among delivery service providers and delivery associates, working with fintech firms including Risewise, VidyutTech, cKers, Turn0, NBFCs, lending institutions and the Small Industries Development Bank of India. The company has also collaborated with government initiatives like Shoonya and NITI-Aayog's e-FAST program.

These partnerships align with India's growing focus on e-mobility, addressing environmental challenges and contributing to the national goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. Amazon will continue to invest in electrifying and decarbonising its fleet, helping reduce the industry’s dependence on non-renewable resources.
