Amazon recognizes the importance of recycling electronic equipment at the end of its useful life, and is therefore committed to leading awareness and facilitation drives among communities for responsible e-waste disposal.
Since 2018 Amazon India has led multiple initiatives to raise awareness of safe and efficient disposal of e-waste, among its customers, employees, and communities.
How do you dispose e-waste safely?
A recycling program for electronic items including Amazon devices like Kindle, Echo range of devices, Fire TV stick, and select accessories is one initiative in this direction. Availing this facility, you can share the responsibility in reducing the environmental impact of the e-waste generated at the end-of-life of their products. Simply, call the toll-free number (1800 103 7394) to have any of your e-waste collected. Amazon’s e-waste recycling partner company, Reteck Envirotech will facilitate the collection from your house and channelize towards environmentally sound recycling treatment and disposal of e-waste. Over 2000 households have participated in this initiative till date. More on this here.
Why, you ask?
E-waste has been one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. While e-waste contains re-mineable valuable materials, it also contains harmful substances like cadmium, lead, and mercury. In the absence of proper awareness, disposing e-waste in landfill can result in toxic emissions to the air, water, and soil and pose a serious health and environmental hazards.
Amazon also runs awareness drives for its employees and has set up e-waste collection boxes in office premises to help employees dispose their e-waste responsibly. Multiple such educational drives are also conducted for Amazon’s community centres to spread awareness of safe e-waste disposal among people of marginalized communities.
Till date, around 500 kgs of e-waste has been collected and managed responsibly through these efforts.
Protecting the environment and the communities where we work and live is one of Amazon’s biggest priorities. So this Earth Day, join Amazon in its commitment to a sustainable future. Be mindful of the e-waste you generate and dispose.
